Our Company is reaching new heights in the US Market, with intense marketing efforts that started in 2012 and is still on-going.

During this year, new products will be introduced to meet consumer needs and the Mezzacorona brand will gain popularity thanks to the strong commitment of our subsidiary, New York based, Prestige Wine Imports Corp.

Why Choose Screw Caps?

At the end of the 90’s some prestigious wineries started using screw caps for their premium wines. PlumpJack Winery in Napa Valley, for example, began using screw caps on their expensive Cabernets in 1997 and they had no trade fallouts.

In the following years, more and more wineries all over the world decided to adopt this new kind of closure in order to prevent consumers from experiencing a “corked wine”.

The introduction of screw caps has not been easy, though. At the beginning, many consumers associated the screw cap with low quality products, but now screw caps have gained widespread acceptance. Here are the main reasons why:

– They preserve the taste and smell of the wine;

– They prevent oxygen from entering the bottle;

– They reduce the sulphate content (antioxidants);

– They are easy to open and close;

– They are hygienically more secure;

– They increase shelf life.

For these reasons, screw caps are overtaking the cork as the preferred bottle closure by wine growers and winemakers alike.

They literally protect the fruit of their labor and now consumers are understanding the benefits as well.

Sometimes, though, consumers face some problems with opening screw capped bottles. Sometimes a screw cap is difficult to open, but in most cases you just need to follow a simple trick. If you try to open the screw cap by holding the bottle by the neck, it is more challenging to open, but if you hold it from the bottom, it shouldn’t be difficult at all!

Watch our YouTube video, featuring our winemaker Lucio Matricardi, who will show you how to open a screw cap bottle correctly!

HARVESTING AT MEZZACORONA, ONE BIG FAMILY

Autumn, with its amazing colors and flavors, has finally arrived and the harvest at Mezzacorona is almost over. Our farmers are still harvesting the latest red varietals, Teroldego grapes in the Rotaliana valley, in the north of the Mezzacorona estates, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the vineyards located more south, close to the Garda Lake.

This year we could not have hoped for a better harvest here in Trentino. September 2013 was characterized by perfect weather conditions: beautiful, warm, sunny days and cold nights allowed for a perfect, ideal ripening of the grapes, especially for our Pinot Grigio, plus the ideal environment for our farmers to work in the fields.

In our region, grapes are harvested all by hand since most of the vineyards are planted on steep hills and the use of harvest machines is impossible. In many other wine regions in Italy, where vineyards are planted on flat and wider areas, harvest is all mechanized, allowing a huge saving in terms of time and labor costs. Here, at the foot of the Italian Alps, the territory configuration allows only manual harvest.

During this time of the year, we like to invite our customers to the vineyards to show them how grapes are harvested here at Mezzacorona. All families are on the field to help, from the white-haired grandfather to young nephews; all generations are involved during this important time of the year. The enthusiasm and happiness in the air during those days, walking through the vineyards and at the winery, is amazing.

It is the priceless reward for a year full of commitment, sometimes worry, but always passion, which we all put in our job. It gives back the family dimension that it is sometimes hard to recognize beyond the size of a company like Mezzacorona, but it is exactly what we are: a big family, committed and in love with its homeland, working hard to give the next generation the treasure preserved since 1904.

Raise the glass and toast with us, waiting for the 2013 new releases of Mezzacorona!

HARVEST 2013 KICK OFF

We are finally close to kicking off the 2013 harvest season at Mezzacorona in September! Chardonnay is normally first out of the gate, however, the start date this year is 10-12 days later than normal due to a cool spring.

Here in Trentino spring 2013 was pretty cold and longer than usual, causing a significant delay for the beginning of the harvest. However, the months of July and August were characterized by hot and stable weather that have guaranteed a consistent and perfect ripeness for all varietals.

Quantities are expected to be great and the quality will be impressive, even though this year the strong weather conditions put everyone through the wringer.

The heavy rains during spring made it a tough job for our farmers and vineyard managers, but thanks to hard work and meticulous attention throughout the year, the vines developed properly and the grapes have grown healthy and in great quantity.

Ultimately, these last summer days, characterized by moderately warm days and cold nights, have been ideal to help the grapes reach an intense aroma profile and the perfect acidity.

Despite a year of strong weather, the grapes are ready and our farmers look forward to start picking them.

We wish the entire Mezzacorona team a great harvest for 2013!

Celebrate Summer with Mezzacorona Moscato!

What’s better than a delicious, refreshing ice cream to tickle your taste buds on hot summer days?

Here’s something you will not able to resist, especially when paired with our Mezzacorona Moscato – definitely the perfect match!

Chef Lorenzo Callegari of Trattoria Vecchia Sorni reveals his secret recipe exclusively for us:

Strawberries with Yogurt Mousse and Elder Flowers Ice Cream

Ingredients for the mousse:

2 cups white yogurt

1/2 cup sugar

1 lemon juice

1 vanilla bar

3 aspic leaves

1 can whipped cream

Mix the yogurt with the lemon juice, sugar and vanilla. Leave the aspic to soak in cold water, then squeeze it and mix it with 3 tablespoons of yogurt. Pour the mixture in a bowl, add the whipped cream and let it rest in the fridge.

Ingredients for the elder flowers ice cream:

1 cup elder flowers syrup

0.75 liter water

1/4 cup sugar

1 lemon juice

Put all the ingredients in a pot of water and boil for 2 minutes. Cool in the freezer and remember to stir the mixture every 30 minutes until it is frozen.

While you wait for those two mixtures to be ready, chop the strawberries into small cubes, add some lemon juice and sugar and let it rest for about ten minutes.

Once everything is ready, put 2 spoonfuls of strawberries in a glass, add the yogurt mousse on top and then add another layer of strawberries. Decorate with mint leaves and peach slices.

Put one scoop of elder flowers ice cream in a small cup and toast your summertime with a chilled glass of Mezzacorona Moscato!

Meeting Anne, the winner of the Mezzacorona Facebook Contest

Finally last week we had the chance to welcome the winners of our Facebook contest, Anne and her sister Elizabeth on their first trip to Italy. They first enjoyed a few days in Rome, then visited Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, and finally they arrived here, at the foot of our beautiful Dolomites.

We were delighted to get to know Anne, who is a cheerful lady, and her gracious sister Elizabeth. They both come from New York and are deeply in love with Mezzacorona! It was amazing to finally meet them and realize how Mezzacorona has become part of their daily life. Anne said: “I can drink nothing but Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio, I take it with me when I go to my friends’ parties otherwise I do not drink anything else!”

They won the Facebook contest with their photo of a bin full of Mezzacorona bottles they had after Hurricane Sandy. Anne and her family had no power at their place and moved to Elizabeth’s house for about a week. Fortunately Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio is never out of stock at their place, even in case of extraordinary events like that! Visit our Facebook page to see all the pictures that have been posted!

While they were here in the Trentino region, we took Anne and Elizabeth for a tour in our vineyards and showed them where the Pinot Grigio they love is grown. After having lunch on the mountaintop overlooking our valley, they had a personal winery tour and tasting here at Mezzacorona with our winemaker Matteo Covazzi.

Together we had a great time and at the end of the day we felt like we were old friends. That’s what Mezzacorona is all about: gathering together, sharing a moment with your loved ones, and enjoying the best times of your life.

Thank you Anne and Elizabeth, we toast you with a glass of Mezzacorona! Now we wait for the other winner, Laurie, who will be here in September, can’t wait!

Great recognition for Mezzacorona Cabernet Sauvignon

Have you ever tasted our Mezzacorona Cabernet Sauvignon? Well, if you haven’t yet, you should definitely do it, now more than ever!

The 2011 vintage is Wine Spectator’s #1 top rated Cabernet Sauvignon in the World under $13*!

“Well-focused and lightly juicy, this offers flavors of syrupy black cherry, black currant and spice, with a smoky base note” (Wine Spectator, as of the April 30th issue).

Cultivated in our own vineyards, grown in the north of Lake Garda, this Cabernet Sauvignon stands out for its great personality. Thanks to the presence of the lake, there is an exceptional microclimate that contributes to create a Mediterranean corner right in the foothills of theAlps.  Here grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, that prefer milder temperatures, find the perfect environment to express their full potential.

Characterized by a deep ruby red color, Mezzacorona Cabernet Sauvignon has an intense and complex bouquet, with spicy notes reminiscent of eucalyptus and sweet fruits, well integrated with the distinctive fragrance deriving from the maturation in oak. This wonderful wine is the perfect companion for a variety of food pairings like red meats, flavourful roasts, game and aged cheeses.

Nothing should be stopping you now from enjoying a glass of our delicious Mezzacorona Cabernet Sauvignon! Let’s toast with us!

*As of the April 30th issue and according to online archived data of Wine Spectator scores for the 2011 vintage as of April 1,2013. The next price-point at 87 points or more was $13.
